The mission of the Bureau is to protect the public and the environment from the potential impacts of active coal mining, and to promote the restoration and enhancement of active and prelaw abandoned coal mined lands through current mining activities, and the mitigation or improvement of prelaw coal mining impacted water resources.

Coal mining in Ohio began around 1800 and during its first 150 years, was an unregulated industry. Until the time of World War I, coal mining in Ohio was conducted almost exclusively underground and largely by manual labor.

The Mining Program is comprised of three divisions: Minerals, Oil Gas (Noncoal), Maryland Bureau of Mines (Coal), and the Abandoned Mine Lands and Acid Mine Drainage Division.
