Evochron Mercenary is a technical simulation, not a story or character based simulator, so you are not limited by plot requirements or preselected character roles. Your decisions and actions define your role in the game and establish your reputations, wealth, progress, and ranking.
Set your beam and cannon triggers to separate keys. Beams take almost no energy while particle cannons take quite a bit. When in combat first take down an enemies shields with laser beams and then use your particle cannons to destroy their hull/ship.
