Past adversities: the Great Depression, the devastating Flood of ''40, the infamous Theater Murder in ''41, had oll been oversome. None though were going to compare to the disconloation due to the events preceing the Christmas of ''69.

The Fries Cotton Mill (also known as the Fries Cotton and Woolen Mill, the Salem Cotton Manufacturing Company and F H Fries Manufacturing Company) was a cotton mill in Salem, North Carolina, first erected in the Civil War, the Fries Cotton Mill was an important supplier of wool and cotton goods to the Confederate Army.

In February 1903, the mill was sufficiently built and equipped to start operation. The swiftly moving water turned the big wheel. A new town was born in Southwest ia. The town grew around the mill and although the textile mill ceased operation in 1989, the Town of Fries is a lovely spot.

Fries purchased the surrounding rural farmland then hired a local labor force to build a dam, a cotton mill and a fullservice company owned town. By 1901, the New River Train was extended to the mill site and Fries petitioned the ia State Legislature to incorporate the new town .

In 1847, Francis Wilson bought 1,600 acres of land, which he named Fries'' Mill for himself and some other farmers. On his newly purchased land, a sawmill was built, along with a bridge over the stream. A corduroy road, or "pole road", was built to connect Fries'' Mill with Fisler Town.
